Personality Kara is, in a word, brash. She's a smart-ass with a foul mouth and a quick temper. Additionally, she is self-destructive, addicted to both alcohol and adrenaline as a means to salve her deep-seated wounds. Kara acts without thinking more often than not in her private life, as well as in her working life. However, she is a brilliant tactician with the ability to plan missions with ease and execute them with precision. She is unfazed by the unexpected, but she does not handle failure well (see also: her rampant alcohol and adrenaline addiction).

Even while she often scoffs in the face of most authority (or punches authority in that face), she takes her duty to her fellow pilots and to the Fleet very seriously. She is an ace pilot, performing feats of flight and maneuver others would never dream of. Though seemingly cocky and self-assured, Kara thrives on the adoration of the other pilots as well as the approval of her commanding officer, Bill Adama. Without positive feedback, she tends toward sarcasm and pettishness, but she does enjoy a well-matched rivalry. Though it has previously been stated, it bears reiteration: Kara does not handle failure well. However, she will use her drive for perfection at the stick to goad others to be their best, and is therefore a driven and inspired leader.

Inwardly, Kara is deeply religious. She believes in the Gods of Kobol in a literal enough sense she doggedly sought out religious artifacts for the President of the Colonies' cause, and she invokes the power of the Gods often, though privately. Though she appears outspoken and tough, she is truly lonely and in need of a shoulder to lean on, and while the Gods do offer her some solace, what she really desires is someone's unconditional, unmitigated love (namely, that of her dead mother, though she'll certainly settle for love of the romantic variety).

Background Kara was born on a cosmopolitan capital planet, Caprica, to an abusive mother, Socrata, and absent pianist father, Dreilide. She was going to be a professional Pyramid ball player, but her knee gave out, so she joined the military, ultimately rising to rank of Captain. She was initially posted aboard the Battlestar Triton where she had court martial proceedings brought against her by her Commander. After the court martial was dropped, she left Triton to become a flight instructor. During her tenure, Kara met and became engaged to one of her students, Zak Adama. Though he failed three maneuvers, she passed him though his Flight program, a decision that eventually led to his death. She resigned as a flight instructor following Zak's death and took a post under his father, Bill Adama, aboard the Battlestar Galactica. There, she grew close to Commander Adama, earning his respect for her as a pilot and his love for her as a surrogate daughter. She served two years as a pilot aboard Galactica before the Cylons attacked Colonies.

Kara regularly proved her worth as a soldier in and out of the cockpit after the attack. After she crash landed on a moon and was injured, she rigged a Cylon Heavy Raider (essentially, a flying robot made of flesh) to fly for her. During her recovery, she was charged with interrogating the Fleet's first Cylon prisoner, Leoben Conoy. Conoy told her that her specific role would be to deliver his soul unto (the Cylons' singular) God. Later when she had recovered and returned to flight status, she took the Raider to Caprica against orders, intent on retrieving an artifact, the Arrow of Apollo, from the city of Delphi. While on Caprica, Kara was wounded, captured by Cylons, and taken to a "Farm" where they mended her wound but harvested her ovaries in an attempt to breed a Cylon/human hybrid.

Later, when Galactica ran across another Battlestar, Pegasus, Kara piloted a stealth Blackbird against orders to take important reconnaissance photographs of a Cylon Resurrection Ship. Though she acted against her CAG's (Captain of the Air Group) orders, Pegasus' Admiral, Helena Cain, was impressed and promoted her to Captain and CAG aboard Pegasus. Kara then planned the successful destruction of the Resurrection Ship. Later, when Bill Adama's son, Lee, became Commander of Pegasus, she assumed his position as CAG aboard Galactica.

While she was on Caprica to retrieve the Arrow of Apollo, she met Samuel Anders who was leading a small resistance. She and Sam bonded over their shared prowess at Pyramid (he was a professional player) and became lovers. When she was about to leave, she promised him she would return to rescue him and the others. When she was unable to convince the President or Adama to let her lead a search and rescue mission, she was consumed with guilt until Adama allowed the SAR; Kara brought the survivors to Galactica where Kara and Sam eagerly rekindled their relationship.

Not long after the survivors were recovered, Galactica encountered a habitable, though inhospitable, planet. The colonials landed and began a settlement. Kara and Sam married and lived for a year on so-called New Caprica until the Cylons discovered the settlement.
