"What do you miss?"
It was a game they played often, and one that they doubted was unique to them. As rations steadily declined (both in number and flavor), and the black market value of luxury climbed, the entire Fleet found themselves wishing for and wanting the things they remembered from Before.
"Strawberries," came Archie's answer from beside her.
Kara rolled her eyes and shoved him playfully. "You would say something like that."
Archie rolled onto his side, propping himself up on his elbow to look down at her. "Something like what? What have you got against strawberries?"
Kara wrinkled her nose, inventing an argument because who didn't like strawberries? This was just the unique part of their version of the game - the pair of them were both so stubborn, they had to pick apart the other's choices. "They're all... healthy. And those little seeds get stuck in my teeth."
Archie grinned, and Kara was sure he'd cooked up this answer a while ago, and had just been waiting to give it. That was so like him, she smiled back in spite of herself.
"Ever had strawberries and champagne?" he asked, not giving her time to answer. Instead, he drew the hem of her shirt up, exposing a narrow stripe of her stomach. He ran his fingers across it slowly as he talked. "If you dip 'em in the champagne when they're cold, they get covered in bubbles." Kara shivered at the prospect of what an ice cold, champagne-soaked strawberry would feel like in place of his fingers. His smile turned a little dark and he leaned closer. "They taste gorgeous that way."
"Yeah?" she challenged, her voice betraying her completely. "Care to tell me where you learned that?"
All at once, he drew away from her completely, folding his arms over his chest and grinning impishly. "No, I don't think I will."
She wasn't going to stand for that, so she pounced on him, determined to wrest a story from him one way or another. A few minutes later, she still didn't know the truth, but the pair of them were laughing so hard, they collapsed back to their respective positions on his bed, panting and relaxed. As they regained their breath, Archie peeked over at Kara. "What do you miss, then?"
Kara looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, really thinking it over. Completely serious, Kara answered, "Corn chips," and they began laughing all over again.
